About Malindo Air
Malindo Air is a hybrid airlines to be based in Malaysia. It is a joint venture between Malaysia’s National Aerospace and Defence Industries (NADI) (51%) and Lion Air of Indonesia (49%). The name ‘Malindo’ came from the name of respective countries: Malaysia and Indonesia. Malindo Air plans to start operation on 1st May 2013 from the new KLIA2 terminal initially. However, Malindor Air has brought forward the launch date to mid-March 2013 with domestic destinations
The entry of AirAsia of Malaysia in the home turf of Lion Air has encourage the airline to enter Malaysia’s market with a subsidiary airline. AirAsia’s subsidiary Indonesia AirAsia in partnership with parent firm bought Indonesian carrier Batavia Air to gain foothold in the Indonesian market. The deal resulted in turf war between Lion Air, Indonesia’s biggest low-cost carrier and AirAsia, Asia’s biggest low-cost carrier.
Initially, Malindo Air will operate flights between Malaysia and Indonesia and flights are expected to begin in May 2013.
Malindo Air has brought forward the launch date to mid-March and will begin with domestic flights i.e. Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. Other destinations planned including India, Shenzhen, Guang Zhou & Hong Kong.
Malindo Air’s parent firm Lion Air intends to start operations with 12 B 737 aircraft. The company is planning to reach 100 planes over a ten-year period of operation.
Since Malindo Air establishment, it has shown rapid progress from only one local destinations to various destination in South East Asia and also to India. Malindo Air rapid expansion is more or less give impact to the no 1 rival AirAsia. If you notice, AirAsia has reduced many of it fare to destinations where Malindo Air flies.
